Today, I will cover a possible reason why Inovio's Covid 19 vaccine should be granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA.
Guillain- Barre Syndrome (GBS):
It is a neurological disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, the part of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. The onset of GBS can be quite sudden and unexpected and requires immediate hospitalization.
I once had two family members (in laws) brothers and both physicians that both came down with GBS. And, it was not a pretty sight. The effects were life threatening, debilitating and lasting. It took years to overcome the crippling effects and some still linger. I have personally witnessed this.
And what triggered all of the above? Yep, a simple flu shot.
The rest of the family observed these two doctors health deteriorate to where they had to stop doctoring and close up their practice. One forever and the other took two years before recovering.
Now do you think these two brothers and doctors will EVER get a conventional flu shot again? Further, what about the family of these brothers? - their children and nieces and nephews who helplessly watched the deterioration of their father's robust tennis playing life style and health- ALL just from a flu shot ?
Even if and when a vaccine is developed for Covid -19, I seriously doubt that anybody who witnesses how a family member is crippled by GBS as triggered by just one flu shot - will ever want to try a conventional flu vaccine, even IF for Covid -19.
Enter Inovio's INO-4800 vaccine. This is my understanding of the way it is designed and the advantage:
First, Inovio's vaccine is a new type of DNA vaccine that is delivered through a process called "electroportation" . The patented Inovio "Cellectra "device is used to give the skin a tiny zap of electricity to embed the DNA instructions, like a recipe at the DNA level to recognize Covid -19 and in the case of INO4800, the recent mutant as well. From there, the body is now trained to recognize the pathogen and create the messenger RNA cells that are now trained to create the exact balanced antibodies and fighter T cells to recognize the Covid 19 as an invader and either suppress it at the infection site and/or created durable lasting t cells that will defeat the virus in the body. For the above reason that INO 4800 is not a conventional vaccine but a new type with different delivery and processing techniques it will be less likely, in my opinion, to trigger such ailments as Guillain- Barre Syndrome.
If 20,000 people come down with GBS I will predict that an average of ten related family members may witness the debilitating effects. Right there, it will mean to add approximately another 200,000 people that will not take a conventional Covid 19 vaccine. Is GBS hereditary? I will say YES , if not bodily it sure in the mind as something to be avoided. And the people that don't take the flu shot may be the ones at high risk.
This is just one reason that the FDA may be watching INO-4800 for EUA status. There are other's such as listed in the DOD contract for the Cellectra devices and health care workers.
